Built between the first half of the sixteenth and mid seventeenth century the Walls of Lucca are intact until today. Composed of twelve embanked hangings, which link eleven bastions, with brick vestments twelve metres high and wide thirty at the base, they develop for more than four kilometres, and their age-old trees (plane trees, horse chestnuts, hackberry, red oak, etc. ..), make the Walls a large and beautiful urban park and a privileged approach to the city and its territory.

Their full conversion to civilian use dates from the early nineteenth century when the old hangings of the fort became the shaded citizens walk: a way of thinking and living the Walls, in full respect of high cultural value of the monument, which continues today.
Among the leafy trees, whose colours change from season to season, many citizens and tourists from all over the world, walk, meet and pass their time daily. Few monuments, like the Walls of Lucca, are so intensely lived.
