The church was rebuilt and enlarged in the fourteenth century. The church houses the tomb of Giovanni Guidiccioni (1500-1541) Bishop, poet and humanist. Inside is a plaque in remembrance of Castruccio Castracani degli Antelminelli, a distinguished citizen and leader of Lucca.
In the chapel to the right of the main altar are the remains of the tomb of Ugolino Visconti, governor of Pisa, expelled by his grandfather Ugolino della Gherardesca (1288). His heart and some guts were preserved in a casket that was lost during the reconstruction works of the chapel in 1746.
Today there is a plaque in Latin that begins with the words "Here is the heart of the famous noble Ugolino, judge of Gallura ...".
Dante Alighieri also reminds his friend in canto VII of Purgatory.
The square in front of the church has been recently restored.
