Chiesa di S. Michele

Piazza S. Michele
Piazza S. Michele

The Church of San Michele is located on the area of the ancient Roman Forum, and was at all times the centre of the city, a place of meetings and trade.

Mentioned for the first time in 795 as ad forum, the building of the actual church began in 1070 by will of Pope Alexander II. The church has different architectural styles due to the various periods through which the building carried on.

There is a very high exterior facade which is even higher than the roof and it is rich in sculptures and carvings, many of which were remade.
The statue of the archangel St. Michael stands out as it is located in the upper part of the church and it is 4 metres high. To keep it well fixed against strong wind a very lot of iron was used.
Legend says that there is an enormous diamand set in the ring the angel has on its finger, and at night from a certain point of the square, you can see the sparkle.

Among the works inside one can admire the Madonna and Child by Luca della Robbia, and the panel of Four Saints of Filippino Lippi.
